Better care for surgical patients
“I really like knowing the names of the nurses. They change every day or so. To know the names is a little more personal.” Louise Mitchell, Patient RPIW 38
Patients recovering from surgery on Pasqua Hospital’s Unit 4D now know their care plans within hours of arriving on the unit, rather than the previous
four days. To achieve this improvement, nurses do their daily report at the patient bedside so that patients and families are part of the conversation.
At this time, they also complete each patient’s bedside communication board. The boards include information on patient diet, mobility, goals, transportation
home, targeted date of discharge, and tests and procedures. Previously, boards were not routinely used.
