RQ Surgical Site Infection Surveillance Program

The Infection Prevention and Control Department in the Regina Qu'Appelle Health Region (RQHR) is currently conducting surveillance on surgical site infections (SSIs) for a number of targeted surgical procedures (i.e., CABGS and Valves, C-sections, Hysterectomies, Colorectals, Total Hips and Knees, and Neurosurgeries). Surgical patients are contacted by phone to determine if they developed a SSI following their surgical procedure. The identification of a SSI is based on criteria developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

As part of our SSI surveillance program, physicians may receive a call from an RQHR Infection Control Practitioner asking about a patient’s SSI. For every SSI identified, information regarding patient risk factors and the surgical procedure are collected. The information gathered will help improve our surgical program in the health region.
