Contacting the Critical Care Units Via Telephone – New Process to Protect Patient Privacy

21-Jun-2017

In an effort to better protect the privacy of the patients in the Critical Care Units (PH ICU, MICU and SICU) and to ensure that our staff members are disclosing information over the telephone only to the patient’s chosen family, friends or physicians, we have implemented a new process managing confidentiality.

Family physicians who inquire about their patient when in a critical care environment are being asked to identify themselves as  “Dr…, the family physician of (patient) HSN # = and DOB =”.  Once this is provided, the bedside nurse will provide the necessary information to the physician calling.  The physician’s name and a note around appropriate documentation will be included in the nursing progress notes as per our normal process.
