Computerized Provider Order Management Demonstration Event - Save the Date!  September 20, 2017 or September 21, 2017

28-Aug-2017

Regina Qu'Appelle Health Region and Saskatoon Health Region are working together to bring Computerized Provider Order Management (CPOM) to tertiary acute care sites in Saskatchewan through Sunrise Clinical Manager (SCM).

Dear Physician Colleagues:

Regina Qu'Appelle Health Region and Saskatoon Health Region are working together to bring Computerized Provider Order Management (CPOM) to tertiary acute care sites in Saskatchewan through Sunrise Clinical Manager (SCM). A demonstration "Day in the Life" event will be held on Sept. 20, 2017 in the afternoon (13-1600 hrs) and Sept. 21, 2017 (17-2000 hrs) in the evening at the RGH Auditorium. You may have recently received a calendar invitation for these events.

All physicians interested in this project are invited to attend to see how these changes may affect you. We need your involvement to make this transition a success! Please see below for more information:

What is CPOM?
CPOM is an electronic system of placing and managing orders, including the resulting workflows for all professional disciplines who care for patients in hospital. It will take the place of paper "Physicians Orders" and "Pre-Printed Orders", and will also replace the current Medication Administration Record (MAR) with an eMAR (Electronic MAR) in SCM.

Will it affect me?
If you provide care to any designated outpatient, inpatient or emergency room patient in the Regina General or Pasqua Hospitals, YES!

Why is this happening?
This is the next phase of deployment of an Electronic Patient Record (EPR) for inpatients. Preparations have been underway for several months and this is a key component for further transition to an EPR. It is also one of the steps on the long journey to the ultimate goal of one single Electronic Health Record. Future communications will be coming on the benefits and changes with electronic orders vs traditional written orders; you will also begin to see invitations to participate and weigh in on the future state of provider orders and order sets in SCM. Your participation in the development of electronic order management is vital!

When is this happening?
The roll out is planned to begin in Regina starting in June 2018, followed by Saskatoon thereafter.

Who is involved?
Stakeholders from multiple areas including physicians, nursing, medical imaging, pharmacy, laboratory, therapies, nutrition & food services, administration, and information technology (including our SCM vendor) have come together to highlight and validate our current processes and workflows to determine where change may be required to migrate to an electronic format.  The management of electronic orders will be demonstrated in the “Day in the Life” sessions – however, this is only a demonstration and we will need as much feedback and participation as possible to build the CPOM system that works for us.

Working groups will also be formed over the coming months to go through the identified workflow and process details to develop and make recommendations for our future state. You may be asked to participate in these groups - please do so!

There will also be a Physician Advisory Group to assist in governing the CPOM project – this group will assist in directing the transition process, communication and change management strategies, and advise on provincial order sets. More information about this will be coming soon.
