Palliative Care: Programs and Services
Regina Qu'Appelle Health Region Palliative Care Services
The offices of Palliative Care Services are located in the Pasqua Hospital on the fourth floor above the Allan Blair Cancer Centre. The Family Room and Palliative Care Resources Centre are located within this office area.
Services provided by Palliative Care Services in cooperation with Regina Palliative Care Inc. include:
Bereavement Care - Palliative Care Services has resources to provide support when your loved one is dying. Help is also available to assist you after the death has taken place.
The Bereavement Coordinator provides grief counseling and can help in locating appropriate resources to meet your needs. An Adult Bereavement Group is offered three times annually with monthly follow up sessions. A Childhood/Teen Grief Group is offered twice a year. Programs are facilitated by professionals and provide both support and education.
Education - Palliative Care Services offers extensive educational programming in the community for both medical and non-medical care givers through workshops, conferences and informational presentations.
Family Room - Palliative Care Services has a family room for your use while staying in the Pasqua Hospital. It provides "time away" from your hospital bed in a homelike relaxed atmosphere. You may invite family and friends to watch a movie, order in food, play cards or use it as a calm place of retreat.
Music Therapy - The music therapist is available to provide music therapy sessions with you and your family. Music therapy complements palliative care by aiming to improve quality of life through addressing physical, emotional and spiritual needs that arise during this time. This is accomplished by listening to music, writing songs, singing, playing instruments, and with conversation.
Occupational Therapy - The occupational therapist's role is to make the most of the client's capacity and independence in the areas of self-care, work and leisure within the constraints of their physical limitations. After a thorough assessment , the occupational therapist will help correct underlying problems, teach alternative methods or supply appropriate equipment in order to maintain safety, comfort and independence.
Resource Centre - The palliative care office has a lending library of current books, videos and tapes. Information is relevant to all ages, including children, and covers topics such as hope, spiritual care, anticipatory grief, home care, coping and bereavement.
Social Work - The role of social work is to help patients and families deal with the emotional and social needs of illness, death and bereavement. Interventions include both individual and group/family counseling. Resource counseling such as future planning, will/estate planning, financial issues, community referrals and discharge/care planning is also provided. Social Work is offered in the home, hospital and long term care.
Spiritual Care - The Palliative Care Chaplain is available to those who request supportive counsel for spiritual or religious needs. On request, the Chaplain will be happy to arrange a visit from community religious leaders from any faith tradition.
Volunteer Services - Volunteers deliver sensitive and skilled care to patients in acute care, long term care and bereavement support follow-up by phone. There is no charge to client or family for volunteer services and referrals may be made by the client, family member, friend, nurse or others.
