The Family Medicine Unit is not accepting new patients at this time.
The Family Medicine Unit is devoted to creating, preserving and disseminating knowledge and skills specific to the practice of Family Medicine. The mission is twofold: to provide high quality health services and provide university and community based education for the College of Medicine students who are specializing in Family Medicine. The emphasis is on providing the services of various health care team members to assist you with your immediate health care needs and to provide continued support for your health goals through health promotion and illness/injury prevention services.
A key principle of the Family Medicine Unit is continuity of your care. While a health team member may provide your care, your family physician is always informed and/or consulted.
A staff physician or resident is on call at all times.
The Family Medicine Unit is the Primary Health Service Site to support the range of services provided through the Regina General Hospital.

Primary Health Care Services
The Family Medicine Unit is one of several sites in southern Saskatchewan to pioneer the use of the Primary Health Service Site as a new way of delivering health services.
Primary health care services:
- address the basic health needs of individuals and communities
- are the client's first point of contact with the health system
- provide easy access to front-line health professionals such as physicians, nurses, social workers, nutritionists, physiotherapists, and home care workers
- support the planning and co-ordination of all health services
The benefits of primary health care include:
- emphasis on care of the whole person
- the focus of care is on health improvement through promotion of good health practices, as well as early diagnosis and treatment
- health services are easier to access because health professionals work together as a team
- the care plan that is developed by the primary health services team reduces client frustration and anxiety
- a health-care team member takes responsibility to monitor and follow-up with a client's care
The Team
The physician is a member of a primary health care team that may include nurses, medical residents and students, social workers, nutritionists, community therapists, physiotherapists, pharmacists and other professionals as needed. Each team member brings special skills and knowledge to the care process, while providing ready access to a range of illness prevention treatment choices. Different team members are involved depending on the needs of the individual. When appropriate, the primary care nurse may guide you to the team member who is best able to meet your needs.
At the Family Medicine Unit there are 11 experienced family physicians who are responsible for the medical practice. They are also faculty members of the University of Saskatchewan and have responsibilities for teaching, research and university administration.
The unit also uses the services of medical residents who are physicians. They have chosen to take further training to specialize in Family Medicine.
There are two registered nurses at the clinic. The primary care nurse has advanced training and is qualified to order diagnostic tests, diagnose common/minor diseases, prescribe and dispense certain drugs. She works closely with the doctors and residents.
The Clinical nurse coordinator coordinates the activities and services of the clinic, provides direct nursing care and organizes the administration in the clinic.
Clerk attendants call you from the waiting room and prepare you for your examination. They assist the physician with your examination and arrange any further tests and referrals as necessary.
Front desk receptionists obtain the initial information for the reason for your appointment.
