Long Term Care Services: Respite Care

The purpose of respite care is to provide temporary 24 hour relief to caregivers at home. Respite services are available to support an individual's ability to live longer in the community by ensuring family/other caregivers are supported.

The Region maintains respite beds in long term care facilities. These services are available twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week and can be accessed in two-week blocks. Access to respite care services is based on the need for temporary relief, the availability of facility resources, and the establishment of a care plan to facilitate return to the community.

An interdisciplinary team, consisting of the admission's coordinator, the individual and their caregiver, the attending physician and facility staff, provide:

  • assessment and referral services,
  • nursing care,
  • client and caregiver teaching and support,
  • self-care, health promotion, and prevention of illness or injury,
  • recreation and socialization opportunities,
  • nutrition, laundry and housekeeping services,
  • as well as medical services in collaboration with a family physician

Respite care costs are based on the fee structure, similar to the home care monthly income subsidy. Additional costs for transportation, clothing, personal grooming items, medications and medical supplies, incontinence supplies, supplies for oxygen therapy, mobility equipment, dental, vision and prosthetic devices are not covered by the accommodation fee.

Information on this service is available twenty four hours a day, seven days a week. For more information contact SWADD in Regina at (306) 766-7200, or outside Regina at 1-800-667-1242.
