First Nations and Métis Health
The Regina Qu'Appelle Health Region has a goal of improving health status outcomes of First Nations and Métis peoples. The First Nations and Métis Health Office (FNMHO) was created to work toward this goal through collaboration with departments and units throughout the Health Region and with external partners.
The attention and resources of the Regina Qu'Appelle Health Region are focused in this area because research shows that health and social outcomes experienced by First Nations and Métis peoples are lower than the health and social outcomes for the rest of the population.
In Canada*, First Nations and Métis people face these and other health crises:
- Diabetes rates three to five times higher than non-aboriginal Canadians.
- TB rates eight to ten times higher than overall Canadian rates.
- AIDS/HIV – AIDS cases rose from 1% of the total number of cases contracted in 1991 to 7.2% in 2001.
*Statistics from First Nations and Inuit Health Branch web site.
Other life challenges that First Nations and Métis people face include:
- high poverty rates,
- drug and alcohol addictions
- increased suicide risks; and
- low education levels.
