What is the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program?

Antimicrobial Stewardship Program

The RQHR Antimicrobial Stewardship Program was formed to promote the optimal use of antimicrobials (e.g., antibiotic, antifungal and antiviral medications) throughout our region and the rest of Southern Saskatchewan. Our major role is to support health care professionals in choosing the right drug, dose, duration and route when treating antimicrobial-related illnesses.

Antimicrobial stewardship is an evidenced-based practice with the primary goal of reducing rates of antimicrobial resistance. Effective application of antimicrobial stewardship practices ultimately results in better patient outcomes, such as decreased length of stay for hospital patients and fewer adverse reactions (including Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea, adverse drug reactions, infection with antibiotic-resistant organisms, etc.). Additionally, antimicrobial stewardship practices promote more efficient use of health care resources.

Another goal of the Program is to promote a collaborative effort among health care professionals to support each other in achieving the best possible patient outcomes with respect to antimicrobial use. We all have unique roles when it comes to using antimicrobials and co-operation from all sectors of health care is essential in the success of antimicrobial stewardship. These sectors include physicians, nurses, pharmacists, dentists, veterinarians and even patients and their families.
